Lunches for Learning is an international non-profit that was founded by a member of Messiah Lutheran. An individual journey through Central America where poverty and hunger are a daily experience; punctuated by the meeting of a young girl begging for money at the Honduran border, fostered the drive to create Lunches for Learning. Challenged by his pastor, this individual began his effort to respond to a need by utilizing the skills of various Messiah Lutheran members to create Lunches for Learning in 2004.
Incorporated and recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) charitable not for profit organization in 2005, a tradition of hope, empowerment and dignity arose. Lunches for Learning has met many challenges to its mission, but it continues to grow. The organization has expanded from a mission of Messiah Lutheran to a program supported by churches, companies, organizations and individuals from across the country.
Today, more than 1,400 children are fed a nutritious lunch every school day at rural elementary schools in the Valle District of Honduras. With the strength of God and the support of strategic partners, Lunches for Learning hopes to continue breaking the cycle of poverty in rural Honduras.
